Spider Road Trips

Spiders for the Common Good 2008

What is it? Spiders for the Common Good will allow 20 students to explore the ways a liberal arts education provides a strong basis for work in the non-profit sector. Selected students will have a chance to combine readings and discussion in areas such as social entrepreneurship, leading change, and social responsibility with visits to a wide range of organizations in Washington, DC that address these issues. At each site, students will learn about the organization’s mission, methods for social change, and opportunities with the organization. Students will reflect on what they learned and discuss connections with the selected readings. Suggested readings include sections of Bill Clinton’s Giving and David Bornstein’s (editor) How to Change the World: Social Entrepreneurs and the Power of New Ideas. These sessions will also provide time for students to talk about how their studies relate to work in non-profits and the public sector. Katybeth Dreisbach (CDC) and Dr. Amy Howard (CCE) will lead the trip.
