Follow Up Letters
It is important to send a follow up letter to employer contacts
after Career Expo, or any similar situation, to further indicate
your interest in the company.

Thank You Letter
This is not optional. Any job seeker who hopes to be successful
will always follow up employer contacts (i.e. phone conversations,
informational interviews, or job interviews) with a thank you letter
within 48 hours.

Inquiry Into Application Status
If you believe that you should have received news about your candidacy,
but have not heard, it is appropriate to inquire about your status.
This can be done by phone, mail, or e-mail. "I am calling/writing
to inquire about the status of my application" and "Are
you able to give me an idea about your decision making timeline
for filling the vacancy" are both appropriate phrases to use.
Responding to Job Offers
Letter to accept a job offer
While you will probably accept a job offer by phone, you should
make a point of putting your acceptance in writing as well. Include
all the details of the offer (e.g. location, salary, starting date).
This helps to ensure that you and the employer understand each other
regarding the offer. It also gives the employer a reason to be pleased
with his/her decision.

Letter to Decline an Offer
If you have decided to turn down an offer of employment, do not
neglect to formally (in writing) let the employer know of your decision.
A phone call is a courtesy; follow it with the letter. Thank the
employer for her/his time, effort, and consideration. There is no
need to go into great detail about why you decided to decline, though
you may briefly state your reasons if appropriate. For instance,
do not write that you are declining because you hated the company
president. It is appropriate to note that, after considerable thought,
you have determined that other opportunities are more closely matched
to your skills and career goals. |
