Already know what networking is but not sure how to do it?
How to Network
What is it?
Networking is a process of connecting with people
who can help you explore your career goals. A network helps
you build contacts and share information for professional
and personal gain.
Why network?
It works. Networking has proven to be the most effective
job search strategy and the most effective way to get
real advice about the information you seek. Don Asher's book
The Hidden Job Market says that 80% of jobs are filled
by people using their networking contacts.
Common reasons to network are:
To gain information or advice about a career field,
industry, or organization
To learn about possible job opportunities (but
not asking for a job!)
To connect with people who are doing the things you
want to do
To tell people about you
To be a resource to others
Common Concerns about Networking
Many students fear networking. Typically, people either view
networking as being fake and bragging, using people, or being
a nuisance. For people who are not naturally extraverted,
the idea of talking to someone they do not know well is terrifying
and intimidating.
Never fear! People like helping people. When you ask
someone for advice, you are paying him or her a compliment.
As a result, that person will be more willing to help you.
Seriously, why would someone want to talk to me?
People love to talk about what they do and get
other people involved in their life.
Employers would MUCH rather hire someone that has been
recommended to them as opposed to someone with whom
they are unacquainted.
If I get a job by networking, I don't really deserve it
It does not make you unqualified or unworthy if you get an
opportunity because of a connection you established via networking.
It indicates that you smartly used your network to get where
you needed to go, and in the process, the employer feels peace
of mind that he/she has hired someone that another person
finds competent. You still need to prove yourself in
the application process, but networking will help you reach
your goals more efficiently and with greater success. Networking
is the system, and using it will only benefit you.
Still Unsure?
If, after reading this, you're not entirely sure about what
you should do next or even where you want to go, that's
definitely okay.
